Pre-Diabetes at Age 9
Growing up, I lived on lean cuisine, frosted mini wheats and pizza. My parents worked their tails off while managing to provide a loving home. We went out to eat more often than not and many family members struggled with weight. At 9 years old, after a crazy fainting episode, I was diagnosed with pre-diabetes! My mom quickly sought out a nutritionist who taught me how to eat a balanced meal and manage my sugar levels. I am not going to lie, it was a struggle. I was only nine and not only did I have to prick my finger multiple times a day, but I also had to constantly explain my nutrition needs to everyone around me.
From Husky to Healthy
Fast forward to my mid-twenties, though I was pre-diabetes free (after healing myself with diet changes), I found myself heavier than I should have been. I worked out regularly and I still ate like the nutritionist taught me, but I was overweight and not happy in my own skin. So, you want to know the straw that broke the camel’s back? A total stranger referred to me as “husky!” Yes, he actually compared me to the clothing department name for overweight boys coined by Sears & Roebuck!
Instead of wallowing in my “husky” pants, I decided it was time to reverse my destiny of being overweight and sick. In the little time I had, I researched high and low about proper nutrition, good digestion, optimal fitness, and the like. But, I had one looming problem – NO TIME. I was a management consultant who worked 12-14 hour days, lived in hotels and airports, ate 3+ meals a day in restaurants, and only saw a kitchen when I visited home. Losing weight to become more healthy seemed pretty much impossible. But, after much trial and error and working with various alternative health practitioners, I found my groove, figured out how to be both a busy bee AND my most healthy self. I successfully lost 25 pounds.
Learning to be Healthy in Motherhood
Becoming a mom added an entirely new level of complexity to staying fit and healthy. I had to adapt fitness and nutritional habits to align with my new life as a working mother. The sleep deprivation felt like torture, especially with a history of second stage lyme, and contributed to my struggle with adrenal burnout. To add fuel to the fire, I was diagnosed with celiac disease and had major digestive problems that caused me to teeter between malnourished to overweight. To navigate my way back to optimal health, I sought answers in a Masters degree in Nutrition and Integrative Health and partnered with seasoned alternative health practitioners to support my unique needs.
Finding My Village
